This month’s Saturday Spotlight theme is Pirates! This month I have talked about Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. You can find that post here.

This week I am talking about Worldcaller by Luke Beckstrand!

Worldcaller is a really interesting book, which an intriguing premise! It follows two brothers in a world that is primarily comprised of islands. The magic system is very reminiscent of Avatar: The Lost Airbender, with unique elemental magic. The pirates in this book were side characters, but our main characters joined their crew to save their world. Since this world is island-based, there was a lot of being on boats and going into ports. The main characters also started the story as fisherman. This is a really intriguing high fantasy story told from the perspective of two brothers!

Jerus Saltier only wants to live a quiet life as a fisherman, but his brother Devith yearns to run off and join the Navy.

Neither of them get what they want.

What begins as a simple fishing venture unwittingly becomes entangled with a complex political coup and a lethal quest for ancient magical artifacts. Jerus and Devith struggle and bond as brothers while making unexpected friends with pirates and kings, fighting sea monsters, and following a mysterious and possibly untrustworthy stranger on a dangerous quest to a haunted island. Their simple goals in life expand as they fight to save not only themselves, but the entire world.
