Top Ten Tuesday: Book I Meant to Read in 2024 but Didn’t

There were many books I wasn’t able to read last year including popular YA and middle reader series.

It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is run by Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s theme is 2024 Releases I Was Excited for But Still Haven’t Gotten To. I don’t pay attention to release dates too much, and I typically like to read complete series or reread books, so I decided to change it a little bit to Books I Meant to Read in 2024 but Didn’t.

There were so many books I meant to read but didn’t so it will be nice to go through this list and determine what books I need to prioritize this year.

Here’s my a Top Ten:

Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear by Robin Wasley

When I came across this book it said it was for fans of Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle. I absolutely love that series and this book sounds similar to it, so I’m super excited. It’s on my 2025 reading list, and I hope I get to it.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

I have seen things for this book for years but didn’t come into contact with it until I started college. My college has a “Common Read” that the whole school, staff included, have the option of reading. Never one to turn down a book or the opportunity to read I snagged my copy, intending to read it in November then got promptly wrapped up in Christmas books. I plan on reading it next week and I might be able to attend a talk by the author in March, which is exciting.

A Thousand Heartbeats by Kiera Cass

I love Kiera Cass’ Selection series and when I saw this gorgeous cover at Target I knew I had to read it. Unfortunately, I got distracted and caught up in other books before I could read it, but I am already planning a Kiera Cass book marathon for April. And my amazing Secret Santa got me a copy for Christmas, so there is nothing stopping me from reading it!

Once Upon a Broken Heart series by Stephanie Garber

I loved Stephanie Garber’s Caraval series, which I recently finished rereading. But I never made it past the first book in her series. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, but I forgot and the books have collected dust on my shelves- until now. I just finished Once Upon a Broken Heart and I have been sucked into that world. I am so excited to finally be finishing this series!

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

I love retellings and contemporary retellings are intriguing to me, though I haven’t read that many. I also put this book up on a few library displays last year and it caught my attention. Both this book and Bookish and the Beast by the same author are on my To-Read this year.

Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

I read Divine Rivals after seeing a display at Barnes and Noble saying it matched my astrology sign. I really loved it and immediately ordered the sequel. I hope to finally finish this series!

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

I absolutely love this series. The main character is amazing, the story is adventurous, and a side character has the same birthday as me! I recommended this series to my sister and decided I wanted to read it again, but forgot. Hopefully I’ll be able to revisit this series this summer.

The Rise of Kyoshi by F. C. Yee

I was rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender in preperation for the live-action series and decided I needed to read the books. Unfortunately I didn’t read the books or finish the show! Hopefully, I’ll return to both, but, to be honest, Avatar: The Last Airbender isn’t my favorite.

Warriors by Erin Hunter

I have this horrible flaw where I read/watch things only because they’re popular. Many times I find some good things, but other times I find things I don’t like that much. The popularity of the Warrior series lead me to think that I need to read them all! This became a problem when I realized just how many books are in that world. I have shortened my Warriors reading to just the first arc, which hopefully I’ll be able to get to this year.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

I read this duology some years prior and really loved it. While it was super good and I wanted to reread it, I remembered that it was a little heavy and I wasn’t in the mood for it at the time I was considering reading it. Then as the year progressed I got distracted. I’m in a better headspace this year and am super excited for this retelling reread.

There were many good books I read last year, but many more that I missed. Hopefully I’ll be able to read them this year!

What books did you mean to read last year, but weren’t able to?

A Psalm for the Wild-Built was excellent, and so was the sequel to it.
