Review:

Born to a noble family, Miyo is raised by her abusive stepmother and married off to Kiyoka, a soldier so heartless his prior fiancées fled within three days into their engagement. With no home to return to, Miyo slowly starts to open her heart to her cold and pale husband-to-be, despite their rocky introduction… This might just be her chance at finding true love and happiness. – summary from Goodreads

My Happy Marriage was a nice, light romance!

There wasn’t much to this book, but it was really cute! I think it pairs nicely with the tv show, so I think it is beneficial to both read and watch it.

There was something about the narration that I both enjoyed and didn’t at the same time. I felt distant from the characters, but there were moments when you got a look inside the inner life of the characters. It was kind of hard to get into at times.

I couldn’t really get into the setting either, but that didn’t bother me. Settings are not my thing, but they are for many so I thought I would mention it.

I think this book also helps explains Kudo’s personality. From watching the show, you don’t really understand him a lot and I can’t quite get a read on him. The book helps us understand his personality and why he acts the way he does.

I like Miyo, and Kudo for that matter. I think Miyo is a cute character, and I love watching her grow through the course of the book. I also think the book does a better job at sharing the hardships Miyo goes through.

It also does a good job of showing Kaya and Koji. They are present in the book, and they have more of a personality, in my opinion.

The romance was cute, though a little awkward at times. I struggle with some of the aspects of their relationship, especially the fact that she does not call him by his first name. I think this is probably a culture difference that I am just unused to. There are also not a lot of mundane moments between them. They’re there, but not described or focused on, so it’s a little hard to believe that they love each other.

I did like the powers and supernatural aspects of the book. It’s not over done and handled in a nice way. It’s subtle and built nicely into the world, so it enhances the story but doesn’t overshadow it.

I love the side characters! Godo is just amazing, and I hope in the future books there is more of him and Kudo. I also love Miss Yurie! She is such a sweet character, and I cannot wait to see more of her!

Ultimately, for this book you need to read it and watch the show. They need each other and both reading it and watching it enhances the experience overall.

My Happy Marriage is a cozy, relaxing book to read when life gets too busy! Around one-hundred-fifty pages, this is a quick read with romance, supernatural aspects, and family drama!
