Saturday Spotlight: Dystopian Book #4- Renegades

An engaging dystopian read, Renegades follows superhero teens as they seek revenge and justice. A wonderful series with equal amounts of action and emotion, Renegades is one of my favorite series!

This week’s Saturday Spotlight theme is dystopian. This is my last post for this theme and I am sharing one of my absolute favorites. So far I have shared Legend, The Knife of Never Letting Go, and Scythe. You can find those posts here, here, and here.

This week I am sharing Renegades by Marissa Meyer. I have loved everything I have read by Marissa Meyer, and this is definitely my favorite.

Marissa Meyer does a lot a fairytale retellings, so this is not her typical book.

Renegades is about superheroes. In this series, there is a certain class of people who have powers. For a while these people were looked down upon, until a select group of people with powers put an end to rampant crime. They then started a superhero organization that spread across the entire world.

This book follows Nova and Adrien in a dual POV. Nova is on a mission of vengeance and hates the Renegades. Adrien is the son of some of the original Renegades and believes in justice, as well as in Nova.

All of the characters are very realistic. They have realistic flaws, wants, and thoughts, which makes this series even more enjoyable. Also, this book series isn’t focused on the action. In many superhero things I have seen/read, it is very action oriented. These books do have some action scenes, but they are also very heavy on characters.

I also really love the different powers that these characters have. Making people fall asleep with one touch, turning into a swarm of monarch butterflies, the things you draw come to life, and your blood can turn onto weapons. There are classic powers as well, but there are some unique and creative ones.

There is also the perspective of the “good guys” and the “bad guys.” I really enjoyed this and liked seeing the differences.

The team relationship is also amazing. Every character is amazing in their own right, but I love the main team. There is romance among the team. Of course Adrien and Nova have feelings. It is kind of enemies to lovers, except one of them doesn’t realize they are enemies.

There is also subterfuge and spying. Nova breaks into the Renegades headquarters to exact her revenge. This makes it even more fun.

Renegades is a dystopian, superhero vs supervillain, enemies to lovers’ book. It is so much fun to read and one of my absolute favorite series!

Summary:

Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice. The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew. Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
