Book Review: Forever Geek

A wonderful, heartwarming conclusion to Holly Smale’s Geek Girl series. Harriet remained relatable and fun through her adventure through Australia. With old character coming together for one last hurrah, Forever Geek is a memorable end!

Review:

Harriet Manners knows almost every fact there is. Modelling isn’t a guaranteed route to popularity. Neither is making endless lists. The people who love you don’t expect you to turn into someone else. Statistically, you are more likely to not meet your Australian ex-boyfriend in Australia than bump into him there. So, on the trip to Australia, Harriet’s lists are gone and it’s Nat’s time to shine. With nearly-not-quite-boyfriend Jasper Harriet is not prepared to run into Nick. Is the world of fashion about to turn ugly for Harriet? It is time for Harriet to face the future, work out where her heart lies, and learn to let go.

I will admit it had a really sad ending. I was not expecting that. I got a little teary-eyed. This series is usually very positive and uplifting, and while dealing with some difficult situations, it has never been downright sad before.

I did really enjoy that this book took place solely in Australia, with the exception of the last few chapters or so. It is always fun traveling with Harriet. And while I will never travel to Australia (too many poisonous things!) I loved living vicariously through Harriet.

I actually really liked Jasper, but just as a friend for Harriet. I think you could tell pretty quickly on how this was going to end up.

I had missed Nick a little bit, so it was nice to see him again. Especially because we got to meet his family and friends, as well as see how he lives. Again, I sometimes feel like Nick doesn’t seem really real. He doesn’t have any flaws. And with the exception of wanting to be with his family more in book three, he doesn’t really seem to want anything but Harriet. I think this maybe came across better in the show than in the book. While I enjoyed him, and his relationship with Harriet, I wanted more from him.

Harriet. Harriet is still amazing. She does try, for like five minutes, to relax a little this book and let go of her plans. When she actually does decide to do things by the seat of her pants, things actually go quite wrong. Which was very entertaining!

In one book review I read for this book, they were going on about character development. At first, I was confused because I felt like Harriet has gone through plenty of character development. After thinking about it, though I concur with the other review. Harriet went through CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! Harriet has never been selfish, but she is often a little focused on her problems. This book she decides she is going to be there for Nick when she believes she needs him. (Another instance of Harriet getting a little confused and overzealous.) It was really sweet and showed that Harriet changed for the better throughout the series.

I will say that Harriet was still Harriet. She was still relatable and a little weird, but so much fun to read. She actually made a point of saying she was who she was and wasn’t going to change, which I really appreciated.

Bunty was in the book as well. I wish she was in the book a little more, but that’s okay. I also think that is how life goes. You go on doing things and your grandparents accompany you, watching and doing their own thing. Especially as a teen. I don’t know if that makes much sense.

I will say I missed all of Harriet’s friends. I loved that Nat was in the book more than in the previous books. But one of the things I liked so much about Head Over Heels was the friendship group. I felt like that was missing a little bit.

I also missed Annabel. I loved her and Harriet’s relationship, and that wasn’t really present.

Forever Geek was the perfect conclusion to the Geek Girl series. Harriet, while still relatable and real, has grown up. While the ending was a little sad, it was fun going on one last adventure with Harriet and Co.!

Quotes

“Maybe saving someone doesn’t always feel comfortable, or triumphant, or even very pretty. Maybe princes and knights get tired too, and feel embarrassed or humiliated. Maybe, sometimes, saving someone hurts and it’s scary and risky and all you want to do is go home.”
